You’re only 50mm Away from Becoming a Better Photographer

50mm“It’s true. There is only 50mm separating you from the photos you always wanted to take. Of course it is a 50mm prime lens that is between you and your goal. All the happy owners of this wonderful lens will testify on its behalf as to how their skill where strengthened by this marvel.” Continue reading at Digital Photography School.

Note from Sam: We regularly stock 50mm lenses for Nikon, Canon, and Olympus at Pixels Foto. Both f/1.8 and f/1.4 versions are usually available and in-stock. Drop by and take a look. 50mm has always been one of my favorite lenses. They are sharp, great for low light, perfect for getting nice DOF when shooting portraits, and super cheap. There is no good excuse for not having a 50mm in your camera bag. Come see us today to check one out.

Utah State Fair Photography Competition

It is time once again (where has the summer gone?!) for the Utah State Fair Photo Contest. The process of entering contests is a good exercise because it motivates you to take a critical look at your body of work and choose images that you would like others to see. The act of printing completes the photographic process and is very rewarding. Printing is a very important part of the presentation of your entries. When you go to look at the other Fair entries, take a few minutes to look at the printing presentation. What paper type was used? Was it a high quality print? Did the cropping enhance or detract from the image? Would a border have helped? Is it well mounted and did it stay that way? We are here to help you with these decisions. We have years of printing experience, and print with state of the art inkjet printers on high quality archival papers.

As an incentive to enter the Fair, we are offering to those who print a winning Fair entry, to bring your ribbon to us (you have every right to show off your accomplishment!), and we will offer you your choice of one of the following:
1) One free size upgrade to the next standard size on your next printing order (ex. from 11×14 to a 16×20).
2) One free mat on your next framing order (we already offer 10% off your framing order if you have your pictures printed at Pixels).
3) One free paper upgrade from photo paper to a fine art paper, which includes canvas, satins, velvet and watercolor paper.
4) One free 10 minute lesson in a Photoshop skill, printing set up, or camera operation of your choice.
Entries can be submitted September 3rd, 4th and 5th at the Fair Park. Go to http://www.utah-state-fair.com/exhibitors_and_competitions/competitive_exhibits/living_arts/photography.php for all the details. This website is an excellent resource for guidance on entering, including criteria for judging and guidelines for making your selection.

It can feel a bit out of your comfort zone to enter a contest. The flip side of this is that it is very satisfying to go through the process and maybe even win a ribbon! Many of our novice photographers at Pixels have propelled their passion forward by entering the Fair contest. In the end, you will have a print that you can proudly display at home or in your office. You can do it!

Come see us! Our hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and Saturday, from 10:00 pm to 6:00 pm. We are at 8934 S. State Street in Sandy and our phone number is (801) 233-9090.

Giants Causeway, Ireland

Earlier today we launched a new trip on the Travel section of the Pixels website.  Slated for 2010, Pixels will be taking a group of photographers on a whirlwind, photography intensive, 16 day tour of Ireland. Departing June 5, 2010 and returning June 20 photographers will spend a full 14 days on the ground in Ireland. Start off in the great city of Dublin and visit the area’s oldest landmarks before heading into the Irish countryside for a full two weeks of nothing but photography.

Lead by Pixel’s owner and professional photographer Ray Taggart trip participants can expect a healthy dose of photography know-how and insider tips as they photograph the famous sights of Ireland.  Accommodations are included in the trip price (as is air=fare) and include historic castles and hotels across the Irish countryside. Participants can expect to see local entertainment many of the nights including traditional song and dance.

Other sights include a stop at the Giants Causeway where thousands of hexagon shaped stone columns have risen from the sea. You will also visit the Slieve Cliffs, the highest cliffs in Europe and the prison of Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin.

New Pocket Wizards

If you shoot a lot of off camera flash like me, you know that Pocket Wizards have long been the standard among professionals for radio frequency triggers. Simply put: the just work. Every. Time.

So when Pocket Wizard announces a whole new system for its radio triggers, naturally it gets people’s attention including my own. The big news with the new triggers is full ETTL (Canon) or iTTL (Nikon) support. Pop your flash on the FlexTT5 receiver, put a MiniTT1 transmitter on your camera shoot wireless TTL flash without the line-of-sight limitations of infrared systems.

If that wasn’t cool enough, the new system claims to be able to buy you a FULL STOP more shutter speed sync out of your flash setup WITHOUT switching your flashes into FP high speed sync mode.  The way it pulls this off is incredibly cool, not to mention incredibly complex. Think of it like this: to the human eye, a flash burst is essentially instantaneous. But if you talk about it in very small increments of time (try milliseconds) a flash burst is actually three separate events. The “ramp-up” is where the flash begins to fire and come up to full power, followed by the actual time the flash is at full power, and finally the trail-off. The traditional 1/250 second sync speed on cameras is designed to capture the entire life of a flash burst.

So what if your radio trigger could fire your flash BEFORE your camera’s shutter opened? The new pocket wizards do exactly that. Before the shutter snaps open, your flash(s) have already finished the ramp-up portion of their firing cycle, buying you a stop extra of shutter speed and only a 5% loss in flash power.

When you consider that a stop in camera terms is a doubling or halving of available light, a full stop extra with the new Pocket Wizards effectively makes your flashes TWICE as powerful. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me. Canon shooters get lucky too, the new Pocket Wizard system is being released for the Canon system first. Check out the links below for more good information:
